ZIPBOLT QT14.100 Newel Post Fastener inc 50mm Driver bit

this is an excellent solution for joining new Newel post to existing "stub". Having sawn off the original newel post completely square I mounted the zip bolt upside down because I needed to clad the remains of the original post with mdf as the new post was dimensionally bigger. The advantage to this strategy was that the hole required to tension the bolt was completely hidden by the cladding so no unsightly plug was necessary. I also used a joining plate to cover the joint between new and old post. If using this system take care when tightening the bolt as the screw mechanism seems a bit delicate and it may be possible to strip the gear is you are too aggressive which would be an expensive mistake. I found it tightens quite well and securely if you apply consistent but gradual pressure. Having installed 3 new newel posts like this at the top and bottom of the staircase I found no issues with this gear.

I tried fitting a stair post with a 30mm dowel but there was too much wobble. Then I found this bolt. Removed the dowel, glued and made right. Then I fit this bolt in quick time. The post is absolutely solid, no wobble at all. Just wish I found it first it would have saved me a lot of graft.

The kit works well, just make sure you’ve got the right sized drill bit before you start the job!
