Walden: Or, Life in the Woods (Thrift Editions)

Good insightful read

For 2 years (1845-1847), Thoreau conducted a self-experiment. He built himself a cabin in the woods near Walden Pond, a simple shanty with the bare necessities. He arranged for his own food by growing crops. He cut down on 'civilization' and let it come to him instead. He sat and pondered about life, he wandered and observed nature. He read books, thought deeper, and aimed to discover the 'truth'. 7 years later, in 1854, he published his contemplation via Walden.Walden is a reflection on multiple themes - the need to simplify one's life, to reconnect with nature, to reconsider the ever-increasing materialism and shallow nature of our interactions, and to find a purpose and identity in a world that forces you to conform. It suggests that if you must belong somewhere, it should be with nature first and civilization second. The book is serialized into 18 chapters that cover a year of his life.It's not an easy read. Since it's a collection of diary entries, some topics struck my fancy and some not as much. There were some descriptions of the pond, the animals, and the trees that made me want to go to Walden pond myself but there were also long-winded write-ups that I ended up glazing over. What impressed me though was how well read Thoreau was, with his text quoting, in ample amounts, Hindu scriptures, Chinese philosophy, Greek mythology, Christianity and more; references I wouldn't have caught on to had it not been for the annotations in the edition I was reading. I agreed with Thoreau's emphasis on individuality and pacing one's life to one's rhythm. There were some nice philosophical nuggets to think over and social critiques to consider. I enjoyed this book.

New concept - opens up the mind

The media could not be loaded.  It's light weight since it's made of paper bag so easy to carry. Worth the price. It's has good quality.

Book is printed on so low quality of paper that words printed on other side of page and the next page are visible on the current page.

The author is known his philosophical articles.He has narrated his life near the walden pond and every aspect of the pond.He narration including the life around the pond in a simple and philosophical way.

This book has become ever important to read so that one can know how to live a simple life in this chaotic & materialistic world...Do give it a shot. Thanks Amazon and GBD Books.

La verdad esta colección de libros es genial, es el quinto que adquiero. Tiene tamaño Perfecto, ni grande ni pequeño, la letra es ideal y el que diga que es ‘muy pequeña’ debe usar lentes con urgencia porque es muy reader friendly

Excelente edição, com notas valiosas de Jeffrey Cramer, inclusive analisando o significado dos termos usados por Thoreau no livro. Recomendo não apenas a quem quer ler o livro, mas também a quem quer estudá-lo.

My fault. I went for the price and didn't check other reviews. Trying to read it but almost impossible. Will reorder a better quality book.

I got the audiobook and am very happy with it. It is read by Adam Morgan who has a rich, clear voice. He brought the book to life.Thoreau’s observations and critique of society are mostly still relevant today—some even more so. He really motivates me to try to simplify my life and focus on the things that matter the most to me.

I Love this book. The observations of society he makes are now more accurate than ever. A thought provoking book for a different perspective on life.
