Sculptural Jewelry With A TwistDesigner Sarah Binder has been surrounded by art her entire life. She grew up in the small town of Palmerton, which is in eastern Pennsylvania's coal region.Palmerton started out as a company town for the area's zinc and mining industry. Over 35 years ago, after the company shut down, the area looked toxic and scorched.Over 2000 acres of vegetation on Blue Mountain had been killed off and the rivers polluted. Efforts to bring back the vegetation failed early on. Many wondered if Mother Nature could ever bounce back from such a blow. It finally is. Where there was once only red bare earth, green has returned.It's from this backdrop that Sarah draws her inspiration; nature in competition with our growing demand for modern technology and conveniences.Her jewelry consists of tapering tendrils, twisting vines, flowing leaves and bursts of color and texture while incorporating an array of man-made industrial materials. Overlapping natural forms with industrial geometric elements gives the illusion of nature fighting the material world.
