Q: I have a remstar plus whose filters are about 1"x3". will these fit?

Q: can I use this in a face mask?

These filters go to the air port on the back of the respirator, not on the mask. The foam is a pre-filter and the multi-layer thinner part would be a HEPA equivalent filter. For those to work well the “socket” must match exactly the filter, such that no stray air gets past around the edges. I have no documentation to confirm whether the main filter is anywhere near the N95 classification to suit a face mask. From the looks of it it appears to have some carbon layer and probably to eliminate nuisance smells, rather than particulates in the very small size range. Also, its surface area is quite small, could cause excessive breathing resistance compared to a much larger mask. In a COAP machine this resistance is overcome by the fan that generates the constant positive air pressure, so you don’t feel any resistance from the filtration, but passive breathing may be affected. In a pinch probably better than none, but if I were you I‘d rather made one out of a washable HEPA filter for a stick vacuum. Much larger surface area.
