There's a lot of French translated to English here which is good as most French books have little translation and you're left to figure out the rest for yourself. This book is not for a beginner or intermediate student as it contains a lot of colloquialisms and French ways of saying things where there is no word for word translation. It gives one or two examples of situations where a word or phrase is used and I think it would be more helpful if it gave at least 3. Some of the fonts are very small and are difficult to see on the Kindle. There is no CD or MP3 download which is a major shortcoming. Listening to spoken French is a critical part of learning the language. Because of all high volume of translated French I would go with 4 stars. With a CD or download 5 stars.

Intermediate Level ~ Great for Review
This book is great for review. You learn to speak contemporary French and common expressions.I think it would be difficult for a beginner to just dive in. It's geared for intermediate students says the publisher. I like the content of the conversations, the French turns of phrase it teaches, and the smattering of grammar review it provides.Agree with others that auditory would be nice. However, if you're familiar with French pronunciation, it's not absolutely necessary and might raise the price.I'm using this for review over the summer to pick up some common phrases and way of speaking.

Very good introduction to idiomatic/conversational French but lacking audio support
Very good introduction to idiomatic French for intermediate students. The book is divided into 10 thematic sections covering everyday life situations. Each section includes dialogues which are followed by an explanation of some of the expressions and idioms used as well as some very basic grammar and workbook-style exercises. The book assumes an intermediate knowledge of grammatical construction. The expressions are "street" conversational style (eg Je pige rather than je comprends for I understand) but as a tool to hone conversation skills, it is sadly lacking supporting audio; after all, this book is all about speaking and understanding spoken French.

Conversation
Practice Makes Perfect French Conversation is a fun way to learn how to speak French. It has a lot of words that are not in the regular list of words that we are taught. For example Je comprends and Je pige means (I understand) but Je pige is not the word that is first taught when learning French. So this give us a new words in which to replace the standard words that are taught when we frist learn French, and I think this give us a more authentic French voice. When I speak French ,I sound more like a native speaker than someone who is just learning speak French, and I enjoy the look on someone face when I use a different word that they are not accustom to hearing.

Self teaching French
I have recently embarked on a journey to learn to communicate with French speaking clients as I come in contact four out of five days on average. I have chosen this series as I had outstanding results in learning Italian, which I also come in contact with. This book is helping me break down some barriers. I also will be on obtaining CD's to help with the pronunciation as well as enlisting every other type of media available. I am starting from scratch so I need all the help That is available. Based on my previous success with this series learning Italian, I expect the same results.

Highly recommended
Useful review and vocabulary builder. While the dialogs have a bit of the tedious quality that afflicts all textbooks, the exercises and the highlighted turns of phrase are extremely useful for someone with basic knowledge trying to get their conversational French up to speed. I bought this before going to France for an extended stay and found it very helpful! Works well on Kindle.

Excellent book for adult learners
As an adult who has been studying French for 5+ years and who is competent in both grammar and vocabulary, I find this book very helpful to my conversational skills. Lots of phrases, expressions and idioms that are useful and easy to incorporate into my heretofore formal sentences. Pertinent grammar reviews without overdoing what I already know. My teacher (who taught French for 25 years in an Atlanta private school) loves the book as do other of her more advanced students.

good for beginners to advanced
Although I have been studying French for years and spent some time there years ago, I learned some valueable tidbits in this little gem. In particular, the use of prepositions, always an issue as many do not directly translate. Also a slew of handy and common expressions. If you are a young person planning to study in France, the slang here is the kind of speech you will hear from people your age.Nothing terribly rude, just not for general use.

Very Useful
I've read this book a few times now, although I never seem to remember much of it. It's basically a series of around 40-odd short conversations using plenty of idioms, but giving explanations and examples and having around 10-15 exercises per chapter. It's definitely a good way to develop your knowledge of French, and builds on what you may have picked up on grammar etc in other books in this series or elsewhere. It's the use of idioms and casual manner of speaking which sets this book apart from others, which is a good thing. The only improvement I'd make is that there are too many very simple exercises compared to those where you have to think up whole sentences yourself. I found those much more challenging and helpful in my development.

Great book to support learning practical French.
This is a very useful book which concentrates on practical French. My French colleagues have looked it over and warned me that it can be slangy at times - the French tend to formality in business conversations, even internal - but that it is valid and reflects how people do actually talk in friendly situations. You will need a certain level of French in order to be able to use this - I would describe this as O Level plus (if you know what an O level is!) - so it is certainly not for the absolute beginner.Very worthwhile and there are surprisingly few French books of this type so well worth buying.

Brilliant
A fantastic resource that really gives you a great experience of how French is really spoken, including loads of idiomatic phrases. There are also really handy and useful grammar reminders along the way. This book would be really good if you have only just started as well because it gets you interested in speaking straightaway and shows you 'why' you're learning French in the first place (unless you only want to read in French, that is...).

good practical conversation
The only thing about this book, as it is american the conversations are mainly in the tu form. Which is only used to children dogs and very close friends. This is unlikely to be acceptable if you are a tourist. However we had fun translating all to the vous form

Good
I bought two books, this one by accident. It is good straight forward and easy to follow. I am using it at home to practice for when I visit my family in Switzerland, French is widely spoken there, I hope to impress.
