The Mode in Footwear: A Historical Survey with 53 Plates (Dover Fashion and Costumes)

Everything you would ever need to know about historical shoes
Wilcox is wonderful at creating great historical costume books, but a lot of volumes tend to ignore shoes. This book fixes that problem by providing loads of information and illustrations (53 plates, but multiple images in most of them). Very interesting just to browse through.

Excellent volume.
An excellent, well researched reference of the history of footwear. Many illustrations (all by the author) that are quite useful for shoe design.

Excellent reference for artists
This is an excellent reference for artists who are looking for an extensive collection of footwear designs from many different countries and time periods. The drawings are excellently rendered and organized in a fashion that is easy to use. For someone just wanting to look at the illustrations it has a wealth of visual content as well as supplementary reading that gives more background information on the function and movements of the fashion trends. My only criticism with this book as well as Wilcox's other similar surveys as well as most other historical illustration books would have to be that there is very little exploration of Eastern or Southern fashions. These books tend to focus on European and American fashion trends so if you're looking for a progression of Southern African or Far Eastern Asian clothing you would not be satisfied with these books. However these books do explore a lot within all the major time periods and countries that were most well known for advancing fashion starting from the Ancient Egyptians to modern day Europe all in a nicely sized book you can carry with you. I would highly recommend not only this book focusing on the unique footwear of the world but the whole set of Wilcox's books for anyone looking to expand their repertoire of clothing designs for illustration, character design, or even historical costume making.

Excellent
I first got the 'Hats and Headdress' one and completely loved it. Decided to buy this one as well and although it isn't as detailed as the other one (the 'Hats and Headdress' one has 348 pages and this one 190) it's wonderful. If you're looking for a historical book (from Ancient Egypt until 1940's) about footwear, this is it. Every era has an introduction (couple of pages explaining what happened related to footwear during that period) and many drawings with little descriptions. So worth the price, I highly recommend it. Shipping and everything else was also great.

Facinating and informative
Really interesting book on shoe styles through the ages. I usually just refer to the images on these type of things for ideas, but I actually read the text on most of it and found it very interesting and informative. Also because it is quite old (just reprinted) it's quite quaint when it talks of 'modern' things.... which are no longer in vogue.

A compact of the original which I personally find better - more tidy - and the quality of the paper is relatively good (including the cover) for it's price. The plates/ images are clear unlike copies of other books that are just scans of the originals. Packaged in a way so you get your copy intact.
